January 14 – England’s deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam, who has emerged as the public’s most respected Covid expert with his clear-thinking, independent and sensible views in contrast to the government’s mixed messages, is the latest figure to warn footballers to avoid over-celebrating goals.
The Premier League has already written to call clubs and players asking them to follow social-distancing guidelines at what is now the height of the virus.
Professor Van-Tam agrees, saying players should avoid unnecessary contact because the UK is in a “dangerous place”.
“We cannot relax until we have a very substantially vaccinated population,” he told LBC radio. “Until then we are in a dangerous place.”
“Every close human contact that is avoidable should be avoided because one-in-three of us will get the infection and have no symptoms at all.”
