February 12 – Tottenham Hotspur have appointed a former NFL executive as the club’s first chief commercial officer with the specific task of securing a naming rights deal for their state-of-the-art but currently under-used stadium.
Todd Kline, formerly of the Miami Dophins, has been brought in by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and will join the club in June, charged with finding a sponsor for the £1.2 billion stadium that has been largely empty because of Covid restrictions.
Kline was responsible for helping the Dolphins land an 18-year naming rights deal for their stadium, worth a reported £180 million, and will help Spurs, who have not found a naming rights sponsor for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium despite playing at the venue for almost two years, increase revenue streams and partnerships amid the current tough financial environment.
The pandemic has had a much harsher impact on Tottenham’s finances than that of many of their rivals due to the substantial debt owed on the stadium.
Kline’s appointment is the latest shake-up of the club’s top management, with marketing manager Emma Taylor and retail manager Victoria Hawksley both having left the club in the last six months. In June last year, Tottenham appointed Jonathan Turner as non-executive director while Trevor Birch served as director of football operations for just three months before taking over as the English Football League’s general manager.
