March 11 – The family of late Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala is taking legal action against English Championship club Cardiff City more than two years after his death in a plane crash.
Sala was tragically killed when the light aircraft carrying him to Cardiff two days after he signed for the club crashed into the English Channel in January 2019, before he could play a single game and the unsavoury dispute over who was liable for his €17 million transfer fee from Nantes has dragged on ever since.
Ahead of a pre-inquest hearing into Sala’s death, the family’s legal team announced its intent to pursue legal action in order to “protect [the family’s] legal rights” pending the full inquest’s outcome.
The family has also launched civil proceedings against 13 defendants including Cardiff and the owners of the plane which reportedly had no carbon monoxide detectors whilst the pilot, whose body was never recovered, had apparently received no night-flying training.
Daniel Machover, a lawyer for the Sala family, said the high court action had been taken “in order to protect their legal rights and remedies arising from Emiliano’s untimely death but will seek agreement to stay those proceedings pending the outcome of the inquest.”
“That makes it all the more important for the inquest date to be fixed, so everyone can plan accordingly.
“Most importantly, the family know that the inquest will provide the answers to the very many questions they have about what went wrong in January 2019 and why Emiliano’s life was cut short.”
