March 17 – Manchester United are Europe’s leading club in terms of having a built a squad that will have a sustainable run at the major titles, according to a report from the CIES Football Observatory.
The CIES data assesses the sustainability of squads based on three elements: players’ age, the length of their stay in the employer club and the duration of their contracts.
“According to these criteria, Manchester United currently has the most sustainable squad among the 98 big-5 league clubs… and can thus be confident in the ability of their team to qualify without too much difficulty for the group stage of the Champions League over the next seasons, and eventually lift again the Premier League trophy,” says the report.
In contrast the CIES highlight Serie A’s Genoa as “a perfect example of short-term planning.”
Five Premier League teams, four LaLiga teams and one German make up the top ten in the CIES ranking with the Basque clubs Real Sociedad and Athletic Club just behind Manchester United and followed by Spurs, Man City, Liverpool and Southampton.
