June 9 – UEFA have been left embarrassed after a local DJ played a song ahead of last weekend’s European under-21 fixture between England and Norway that contained racially offensive lyrics – just as an anti-racism appeal was made.
Europe’s governing body are issuing anti-racism messages before every match at the Championships in Israel, but a song containing references to the ‘n-word’ was played over the tannoy on Saturday evening an hour before kickoff in Petah Tikva.
At its recent Congress in London, UEFA promised a crackdown on racism with a series of strict sanctions for incidents caused by players, officials and fans but were clearly caught off guard by Saturday’s unusual occurrence.
UEFA promised that a full inquiry would be conducted. “There was a misunderstanding regarding the instructions to the local DJ about acceptable lyrics inside the stadium. The process will be reviewed accordingly,” a statement said.
