June 13 – The headquarters of the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) yesterday hosted the first visit of D. Miguel Cardenal Carro (pictured) since he became the secretary of state for sport.
The President of the Higher Sports Council met with AFE president Luis Manuel Rubiales where they discussed the collective agreement between the LFP and AFE, as well as labour reform and its implementation into Spanish football.
The meeting follows a recent conference at the Congress of Sports Economics, where Cardenal answered question on the potential jobs that would be created if Madrid was chosen as the city to host the 2020 Olympics, the economic and job consequences of the increase in VAT in the public and private sports sector, and new forms of sports sponsorship.
After the visit, the Association of Spanish Footballers thanked the secretary of state for sport: “It is an honour for the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) to have received the visit of D. Miguel Cardenal Carro in our offices for the first time and want to thank you all for the warm and loving treatment shown that work with him.”
Cardenal is becoming increasingly focussed on the role of sport within the Spanish economy, and football in particular. He has suggested that there should be study of the value of sport in Spanish society, and the evolution that has taken place in recent years thanks to the contributions of private capital.
The secretary also noted that even in times of economic recession, companies continued to bet on sport while projecting the important values in society. Perhaps a sign here that Spanish football can expect government support, and certainly more government scrutiny, in what have become difficult economic times for its clubs.
