June 7 – The draw for the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for June 25 in Yaounde, has been postponed, throwing yet another Continental showpiece tournament into doubt.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) said it had taken the decision due to “logistical relations related to the coronavirus” with no new date set. The tournament has already been put back a year because of the pandemic.
Sierra Leone and Benin play their outstanding qualifier this month to determine the last of the 24 teams to participate in the finals in Cameroon next January and February.
CAF last month postponed the resumption of World Cup qualifiers, scheduled for the opening weeks of June, until November, blaming Covid-19
In a statement CAF said it “continues to work together with its partners, the Cameroon government and the LOC with the objective of making the Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 (scheduled for January 9-February 6, 2022) a successful event and a great celebration of African football.”
To make matters worse, Cameroon is also in the midst of an ongoing civil war that has raised doubts over whether the country should be hosting the event anyway.
