July 20 – With the covid-19 pandemic still struggling to be controlled in parts of Asia, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has taken the decision to cancel its prestigious awards for a second year running.
Scheduled to take place in Qatar in in November, the AFC Executive Committee, said that the decision was made “in close cooperation with the Qatar Football Association (QFA). The awards were last hosted in December 2019 in Hong Kong.
The QFA will remain as the host of the 2022 edition of the AFC Annual Awards, which will now be moved to January 2023. That will distance them from the 2022 World Cup that is being hosted in Qatar in November/December.
The AFC said in a statement: “With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to severely impact the lives and livelihoods across the globe and in Asia, the AFC and QFA acknowledged that staging such an occasion would be inappropriate particularly during a time in which millions of lives have been lost including those who have dedicated their life to the game in Asia and beyond.”
