Somali football shows solidarity as JCCI mourns dead players from bus bomb attack

August 9 – Somali football has rallied round JCCI FC in an act of solidarity after a terrorist bomb planted on the JCCI team bus killed three and wounded others on July 31.

Somali military-owned sports club, Horseed SC, sent a player delegation including its captain, Ibrahim Abdi and three other players, to the southern port city of Kismayo where the bus attack took place while the club was on its way to Waamo Football Stadium which was being relaunched after renovation.

Three players who sustained serious injuries are still receiving medical care at Recep Tayyip Erdogan Hospital in Mogadishu.

“We came here to show solidarity with JCCI FC and be by their side in this difficult time. We all belong to the football family and we have to show solidarity with one another in such sorrowful experiences,” said Horseed Sports Club captain, Ibrahim Abdi.

Horseed Sports Club handed over game kits [home and away], and training equipment including footballs and cones.

As a result of the tragedy, the Jubaland regional football league has been temporarily suspended to give the JCCI club time to recover and mourn those lost in the bombing. The league will resume in September.
