August 11 – Real Madrid will take legal action against La Liga and investment fund CVC to block a proposed deal between the two parties, which would see the equity firm invest €2.7 billion in the Spanish professional game.
The club said it will launch civil and criminal lawsuits against the president of La Liga Javier Tebas and the chief of CVC Capital PartnersJavier de Jaime Guijarro.
“The Board of Directors of Real Madrid CF has unanimously agreed to carry out both civil and criminal legal actions against the president of LaLiga, Mr. Javier Tebas Medrano, against Mr. Javier de Jaime Guijarro responsible of the CVC Fund and against the CVC Capital Partners SICAV-FIS Fund itself,” read a club statement.
“Likewise, the Board of Directors has also decided to carry out legal actions of all kinds that are deemed appropriate to annul and nullify the possible agreements adopted by the LaLiga Assembly, to be held on August 12, 2021, regarding the agreement between LaLiga and the CVC Fund.”
On Twitter, Tebas responded to Real Madrid’s statement, accusing the club’s president Florentino Pérez of “using threatening methods that he has been using for years.”
“Clubs and institutions have been supporting their threats for years, added Tebas. “This has been the case since 2015 against the centralised sale, the constant challenges of agreements, and the Super League. Real Madrid deserves more.”
Madrid and FC Barcelona have opposed the deal which would give CVC a 10% share in the league’s future commerical rights.
