Wanted by Interpol, Suriname’s Brunswijk cameos in Concacaf League match

September 23 – Concacaf have launched a probe into Suriname vice-president Ronnie Brunswijk’s eventful cameo for his club Inter Moengotapoe in a Concacaf League match against Honduran side CD Olimpia.

Club owner Brunswijk (pictured) selected himself to play for 54 minutes in the match, a 6-0 defeat. After the match, a video showed him to hand out money in the opposition’s dressing room.

“We are extremely concerned at the content of a video circulating on social media which raises potential integrity issues surrounding the Concacaf League match between Inter Moengotapoe and CD Olimpia,” said Concacaf in a statement on Wednesday.

“The matter is being referred to the Concacaf Disciplinary Committee who will commence a formal investigation and a further update will be provided when that process has concluded.”

Brunswijk is wanted by Interpol for drug trafficking. He was found guilty in absentia of drug trafficking and sentenced to eight years in prison by a court in the Netherlands. A French court also sentenced him to prison for ten years in 2000 for the same crime. But Suriname doesn’t extradite its citizens.
