September 27 – Concacaf has disqualified Suriname’s Moengo Tapoe and Honduras’ CD Olimpia from the Concacaf League with immediate effect because of “serious breaches of integrity” following an investigation into Ronnie Brunswijk’s 54-minute cameo in the match and visit to the opponent’s dressing room with cash in hand.
The president of the Suriname club picked himself to feature against Olimpia in last week’s Concacaf League match. His team went on to lose 6-0 and Brunswijk (pictured) was later filmed handing out money in the opposition’s dressing room.
Brunswijk’s cameo went viral and Concacaf’s disciplinary committee launched an investigation into the incident, concluding that “serious breaches of integrity rules occurred after the match.”
As a result, both clubs have been disqualified from the competition and Brunswijk has been banned “for three years from participating in any capacity in Concacaf competitions.”
Brunswijk is wanted by Interpol for drug trafficking. He was found guilty in absentia of drug trafficking and sentenced to eight years in prison by a court in the Netherlands. A French court also sentenced him to prison for ten years in 2000 for the same crime. But Suriname doesn’t extradite its citizens.
