November 1 – Everton Women have brought in Jean-Luc Vasseur as their manager in a two-and-a-half-year deal to lift the team’s fortunes.
The Frenchman, who guided Lyon to Champions League victory in 2019 but was sacked in April after a barren campaign, will succeed Willie Kirk at Everton. Kirk was dismissed after a poor start to the season.
“I’ve come here to write new history with Everton and to win titles,” said Vasseur (pictured). “We have a lot of talent and resources so I think there is good capacity to improve. I have the ambition to build a team that can achieve Champions League qualification. We have to be patient and fight to win.”
In the 2019/20 season, UEFA voted him the women’s coach of the year after he won the Champions League, French league, Coupe de France, Trophée des Championnes and Women’s International Champions Cup with Lyon.
It’s the first time that the 52-year-old will coach abroad. He previously had stints at Créteil, Reims, Paris FC and Châteauroux.
“We wanted a proven winner and he has won numerous titles,” said Everton’s women’s sporting and commercial director Sarvar Ismailov. “We also wanted someone with DNA which matches our club’s – someone with an attacking vision, who fights until the end.”
In the Women’s Super League, Everton currently sit in eighth position. They play fourth placed Brighton next Saturday at home.
