November 4 – LaLiga has formally opened the bidding process for the domestic sale of domestic audiovisual rights, for the first time extending the license period from three to five seasons and increasing the number of packages of rights available.
The Spanish territory rights being offered (which include Andorra) cover the seasons from 2022/23 to 2026/27. The deadline for placing bids is 12:00 CET on 13 December 2021.
LaLiga currently generates about €1.14 billion per season from domestic TV rights but with the increase in rights packages and the security that broadcasters can invest in longer terms, is looking to boost this figure. The bulk of matches (9 out of 10 per round in the top tier) are broadcast on Telefonica’s Movistar channels, with Mediapro’s Gol picking up the rest.
LaLiga said the expanded number of packages “allows potential broadcasters to choose the option, or options, which best suit their preferences or broadcasting capabilities without being bound to a single option.”
While broadcasters can bid for a full five-year term, LaLiga said that they tailor their pitch for a shorter period. “Broadcasters who wish to place a bid may do so for a period corresponding to three, four and/or five seasons. This increase in the number of seasons allows for a greater number of broadcasters to be involved in the bidding process,” said LaLiga.
Potential bidders can send their inquiries to LaLiga up until 24 November 2021 and responses will be published on the official LaLiga website on 1 December 2021.
