November 9 – Australia, who this week reopen their doors to international football for the first time in 763 days with the visit of Saudi Arabia for a crucial Qatar 2022 qualifier, have announced more details of the visit of the women’s World Champions at the end of the month.
Australia will host the U.S. Women’s National Team for the first time in 21 years at Stadium Australia inSydney on Saturday November 27 and at the McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle on Tuesday
November 30.
The two-match series is considered important for the development and profile of the women’s game in Australia prior to their joint hosting of the 2023 World Cup with New Zealand.
To encourage that development and reach out to younger generations, tickets are being made available to registered junior players under the age of 12 for just A$5 across all ticket categories with an accompanying adult.
While football (Aussies call it soccer) is not the highest profile sport in the country it is Australia’s largest club-based participation sport.
Football Australia CEO, James Johnson, said opening the stadiums to the next generation of young footballers wasessential for the future of football.
“In the Commonwealth Bank Matildas and the U.S. Women’s National Team, there are a group of players thatare not only some of the best in the world at what they do on the pitch, but also an inspiration off the pitch as well,”said Johnson.
“For our junior participants to have the chance to see these superstars up close at Stadium Australia, the host venue of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 final, and McDonald Jones Stadium,will ignite dreams that will build a legacy beyond these matches and 2023,” he continued.
Johnson acknowledged that the games could only be staged with significant support from government. “We thank the Federal Government, NSW Government and the City of Newcastle Council for their infrastructureand financial support that has enabled us to host the U.S. Women’s National Team. It is a significant contributionto ensure we partner to deliver world class preparation for the Commonwealth Matildas for major tournaments,while also inspiring the nation and developing the next generation of talent,” said Johnson.
