August 21 – Manchester City will boost their media content off-the-pitch with a deal with California-based camera manufacturer GoPro which will see cameras mounted on players and coaches.
The new deal follows on from an initiative this summer on City’s pre-season tour of New York, where the GoPro media team were granted exclusive access to players to film the GoPro’s first football feature, shot on its new HERO3 cameras.
GoPro has become the brand of choice for extreme sports athletes who attaché the camera to themselves to get first-hand action footage.
The lightweight high-resolution cameras were mounted to the City’s coaches and players during practice sessions, including England goalkeeper Joe Hart (pictured) and French international Samir Nasri.
GoPros were used at both of City’s US fixtures at the Yankee Stadium in New York and Busch Stadium in St. Louis, capturing players-eye views of the pre-match atmosphere and their pre-match preparations.
Tom Glick, Chief Commercial and Operating Officer for Manchester City, said: “From Tunnel Cam to Inside City, we have continually pushed the boundaries to engage fans and bring them closer to the club they love. GoPro has enabled us to take that philosophy to the next level, combining both their cutting edge technology and expertise in capturing raw point-of-view sports footage. GoPro is a perfect fit and together with CityTV, we look forward to creating the next evolution in sports content.”
GoPro is currently exploring 3D capabilities and how these can be applied to their brand of sport filming.
