August 30 – The All India Football Federation (AIFF) President, Praful Patel, has said that the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) will be the sponsor of the Indian national team for the next season.
“ONGC will sponsor the national side for one season,” Patel told journalists.
ONGC previously sponsored the I-League from its formation in 2007 for four years until 2011.
Panasonic, sponsors of Team India for three years, decided not to renew their contract which ended in December 2012.
ONGC produces around 72% of India’s crude oil and nearly half of its natural gas, making it one of the largest companies in Indai and 357th in the Fortune Global 500 list of the world’s biggest corporations for the year 2012.
India currently stands at 145th in the FIFA Ranking and recently lost 3-0 to Tajikistan. Forthcoming fixtures against Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal offer the prospect of some improvement.
