September 3 – Munich has been given the nod over Berlin to bid for part of the 2020 Euro finals which are to be played across 13 venues under UEFA president Michel Platini’s unprecedented pan-Continental blueprint.

The Allianz Arena – home to European champions Bayern Munich – was selected over Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.

German Football Federation (DFB) president Wolfgang Niersbach said: “It was not an easy decision to make because in Munich and Berlin we had two strong applicants who have shown on many occasions that they can manage large events. We are sure that Munich as a location has a very good chance with UEFA to get Euro 2020 games.”

The DFB will apply for one of two packages of matches offered by UEFA, with September 12 the deadline for submissions by prospective multiple hosts.

The first option is to stage three group matches and a knockout game, the second for the two semi-finals and the final. However, Germany may only bid for the group game package if Istanbul fails to be elected hosts of the 2020 Olympics on Saturday since the Turkish city would then be strongly favoured to get the semifinals and final.

UEFA have already decided that the semis and the final will be in one venue and will choose all hosting cities in September next year.
