Coronavirus: Spanish cut stadium capacities to 75%

December 30 – With the spread of the omicron covid variant increasing its pace of infection across Europe, Spanish health authorities have moved to reduce capacities for outside venues to 75% of capacity.

The new rule will take effect on January 1 and run until at least January 31.

The restriction will be reviewed at the end of the month once more is known about the variant, its spread and the severity of the infection, said the authorities.

For LaLiga the restriction will begin with the Valencia vs Espanyol match tomorrow (December 31).

Other stipulations make the wearing of masks mandatory while smoking and food consumption (with the exception of water) will not be allowed around stadia.

While the government has made this a national requirement, some regions have already laid down their own rules. The Basque country has already introduced a 50% restriction, while Catalonia is examining whether to reduce capacities to a maximum of 70%.

One concession the Spanish have made is a reduction in the number of days required to quarantine from 10 to seven.
