February 8 – World football’s lawmakers will once again discuss changes to the offside law at their annual meeting next month, being conducted virtually.
The rule, which is being constantly tweaked to try and make it fairer, is still causing controversy and is on the table for discussion on March 3 by the International FA Board which will hear an update on the use of semi-automated offside technology.
Offside remains a grey area for referees when it comes to consistency and interpretation and it is hoped IFAB will clarify the rule once and for all.
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, FIFA’s chief of global football development, has proposed an attacker be ruled onside if any part of his body is level with the second-to-last defender.
