Palmeiras fan shot dead after riot breaks out in Sao Paulo after CWC loss to Chelsea

February 14 – A man was shot dead during a riot on Saturday among Palmeiras fans who had watched their team lose to Chelsea in the final of the Club World Cup.

The incident occurred outside the Palmeiras’ stadium in Sao Paulo where thousands of fans had watched the game on big screens.

“There were some outbreaks of fighting among fans, which unleashed a riot and a man was shot,” a military police statement said.

Police used teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds and patrolled the surroundings to deter further disturbances.

Palmeiras, making only their second Club World Cup appearance, were bidding to win the title for the first time.

They would have become the fourth Brazilian side to be crowned world champions following Corinthians, Internacional and Sao Paulo’s previous successes.
