September 24 – Next month’s eagerly awaited FIFA executive committee meeting will not only discuss the timing of the 2022 World Cup but a variety of other key issues.
The agenda for the two-day session on October 3 and 4 includes the item “FIFA World Cup Qatar, period of the competition.”
FIFA president Sepp Blatter is asking his exco to approve the idea of switching Qatar from mid-summer but complex discussions seem certain to take place over an alternative date following a warning by the International Olympic Committee against any clash with that year’s winter Games.
UEFA president Michel Platini has already stated that his members are agreed in principle to a move.
There are other highly topical issues up for debate at the meeting, including negotiations between Palestine and Israel, a report on the progress of the Task Force Against Racism and Discrimination and a review of the World Under-20 Youth Cup in Turkey that will highlight poor the attendances.
The agenda also covers reports from the standing committees as well as updates on the preparations for upcoming FIFA tournaments, including reports on the preparations for the next three FIFA World Cups from general secretary Jerome Valcke.
Under miscellaneous items, there are proposals from the Iran Football Federation for the introduction of a Fan Day, and from the presidents of the Football Associations of the Gulf Cup to include the Gulf Cup in the international match calendar.
Iraq is also requesting that a ban on playing international friendlies in the country is lifted.
