March 15 – Another Russian oligarch, closely linked to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, is looking to cash out of his football club ownership.
Valeriy Oyf is looking to offload his majority share in Dutch Eredivisie club Vitesse Arnhem. Oyf made his billions as a director of the Highland Gold Mining company and the Rosneft and Gazprom oil companies. He was then in charge of Millhouse Capital that manages Abramovich’s assets.
Vitesse released a statement saying “Valeriy Oyf has decided to sell his shares,” and that he would be resigning from the club’s supervisory board with immediate effect.
“It pains me a lot to say goodbye to Vitesse, but in the current situation I am taking this difficult decision in the interests of the club, employees, fans, sponsors and other stakeholders,” Oyf said in a press statement.
“I have always felt very involved in the club and enjoyed the great performances.”
Established in 1892, Vitesse is one of the oldest professional football clubs in the Eredivisie and currently lie sixth in the table. Currently competing in the Europa Conference League, they lost their last 16, first leg tie against Roma last week.
