March 28 – The ‘Win It On The Pitch’ campaign coordinated by Football Supporters Europe (FSE) has launched its petition, which, if it gains enough public support, will force the European Commission to consider its proposals aimed at protecting the European sports model.
FSE are looking for a million signatures from across EU countries as part of a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI). Once that target is reached the EU under its own articles must consider taking action on the proposals in the petition.
In its petition the ESI is calling for the protection of the European football model, the recognition of the social value of sport in European society, and the recognition of the specific nature of sport in EU rules.
The ‘Win It On The Pitch’ petition was triggered by the pan-European fury over the proposals for a breakaway European Super League.
“The super league fiasco proved that European sport is on the brink of catastrophe,” says the petition website. “Decades of mismanagement has left countless clubs, communities, and competitions vulnerable to hostile takeovers by predatory investors whose only aim is to make money.”
“We must turn the outpouring of indignation, solidarity, and common purpose that greeted the super league into a clear, practical, and long-term plan of action at the European level,” continues the FSE argument.
“Sport is a social good that belongs to everyone—not just the wealthy and the elite. Now more than ever, it is crucial that the institutions of the European Union, Member States, and politicians work with fans and concerned citizens to safeguard football and other sports across the continent.
The website is published in English but of course UK football fans can’t sign the petition as the UK has exited the EU.
