April 19 – Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium is to get a makeover and a potential expansion taking it from its current 74,000 capacity to more than 80,000, according to reports.
The club announced before Easter that a team of consultants had been appointed to create a ‘masterplan’ to upgrade the Old Trafford Stadium and the club’s training ground.
Legends International and Populous will conduct the initial stages of the process
“Work will begin immediately on developing options for Old Trafford and studying their feasibility, with the aim of significantly enhancing the fan experience. Fans will be at the heart of the process, starting with a meeting between the consultants and the Manchester United Fans’ Advisory Board later this month,” said the club.
“A similar process is already under way in relation to the club’s training facilities, with KSS appointed to develop a masterplan for an expanded, state-of-the-art facility for the Men’s, Women’s and Academy teams.”
Reports have previously suggested that Old Trafford could be levelled with a brand new stadium built in its place. That suggestion appears to have been shelved with a complete modernisation of the current building seeming more likely, combined with an expansion of the South Stand.
