October 17 – Egypt look set to hang on to their American coach Bob Bradley despite Tuesday’s humiliating 6-1 World Cup playoff first leg defeat to Ghana which all but ends the Pharoahs’ dream of reaching next year’s finals.
Reports, however, have suggested Bradley may not take charge of next month’s second leg in Cairo because of concerns over his safety.
After so much painful civil unrest, Egyptian fans had been desperately hoping for the national team to come to their aid by going into the second leg with a decent chance of reaching the finals for the first time since 1990 despite four African Nations Cup titles in the same period.
But Tuesday’s crushing loss severely dampened spirits and somewhat lessens the importance of Egypt’s expectations of playing the second leg in front of a full house in Cairo.
Ghana, World Cup quarterfinalists in 2010, have urged FIFA to switch the fixture to neutral ground because of security fears.
