July 15 – Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has said he is in favour of the CECAFA region hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
On a working visit in Uganda, Motsepe, in an electric blue suit, said: “This region (CECAFA) has not hosted the Africa Cup of Nations before and it would be a good move to both Uganda and Tanzania not only in promoting football development but as also other areas like tourism, investment and boosting the economy.”
“As President of CAF, I have to support all the 54 MAs equally and must say that I would personally not just welcome but encourage a joint hosting between these two countries because it will make a huge contribution to football development in Uganda and Tanzania.”
At the moment, Uganda has no stadium that meets all CAF standards to host the Africa Cup of Nations.
The idea of Tanzania and Uganda co-hosting the continental finals also received the backing of prominent local MP Anita Annet Among, who said “on the issue of co-hosting the 2027 AFCON, we had a discussion with the President and we are ready and willing to do the co-hosting with Tanzania, we have got clearance from our President, and we will be able to do that.”
In May, it was reported that Botswana and Namibia are also planning a joint bid to stage the tournament in five years’ time. In 2023, Ivory Coast will organise Africa’s flagship tournament, with Guinea lined up as hosts in 2025.
