July 25 – It didn’t take long for Manchester City’s new global superstar Erling Haaland to stamp his mark on his debut in a pre-season friendly at the weekend.
The Norwegian scored his first City goal after just 11 minutes against Bayern Munich in Wisconsin, in a game reduced to a 40-minute second half after dangerous weather conditions twice delayed the match.
Haaland left Borussia Dortmund for City in June in a deal worth £51 million. The 22-year-old had missed the first match of City’s US tour, against Mexico’s Club America, to build his fitness.
More than 78,000 fans watched Bayern Munich and Manchester City, the first-ever football (soccer) match to be played at Lambeau Field, home of NFL giants Green Bay Packers, in Green Bay.
City will now fly back to England to take on Liverpool in the annual pre-season Community Shield fixture at Leicester’s King Power Stadium on Saturday.
“It was a good feeling to get started again after six weeks without football,” said Haaland.
“I’ve been watching a lot of City games over the last years and they’ve been without a striker so, of course, I’ve been seeing myself in these situations. I’m not surprised I scored. I have to say the first time winning against Bayern, it was about time after seven losses in a row.”
