Football Australia renews Johnson to end of 2024

August 25 – Football Australia has extended the contract of its CEO James Johnson until the end of 2024.

Johnson joined Football Australia in 2020 having previously worked at City Football Group, FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation.

At Football Australia he led the successful bid to host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup together with New Zealand. This will be the most significant event in Australian sport since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Johnson has also taken a red pen to the governance of Australian football including the creation of a new model for its professional leagues (men and women) in December 2020, when the leagues were ‘unbundled’ from Football Australia into a separate entity, operated by Australia’s professional football clubs, under the umbrella of Football Australia.

“We have taken enormous steps forward as a sport over the last couple of years and I have been extremely proud of what we have achieved. Depsote enduring one of its most challenging periods. Our community has shown its resilience and continues to thrive. The new administration has remained focused and returned Football Australia to a strong financial position and to date, has secured more than $230 million in legacy contributions from federal and State Governments for the future of Australian football,” said Johnson.

“The best for Australian football is ahead of us, and I am privileged and excited to be leading the game into this next phase. In the next 12 months, we will participate in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and host the Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 – two of the biggest sporting events on the planet and an opportunity to leverage the world game which we will not see again in our lifetime.”
