Lamin Kabba Bajo holds on to Gambian FA presidency

August 31 – Lamin Kabba Bajo has been re-elected to lead Gambian football after defeating Sadibou Kamaso in the presidential run-off in the Gambia Football Federation (GFF).

At an extraordinary general assembly in Banjul, the incumbent defeated Kamasou to retain his position.

In 2014, Bajo took charge of the (GFF) after the federation had been suspended by FIFA due to government interference, but his election was controversial as Bajo was seen as the government’s preferred candidate. Bajo served as minister of the interior in 2012.

The national team’s fortunes however improved.

At the last Africa Cup of Nations, Gambia, debutants, reached the last eight before being eliminated by hosts Cameroon. Coached by Belgian Tom Saintfiet, the team proved to be the revelation of the tournament with a strong organisation, quick transitions and lethal finishing.

Last month, Bajo was voted the president of the Wafu A, succeeding Antonio Souare of Guinea to run the nine-member West Africa Football Union, one of six regional zones on the continent.
