September 20 – With the international break about to start and the 2022 FIFA World Cup fast approaching, a number of big name players are still scrambling to get on to their national teams’ final rosters.
One of the notable features in squad selections for the upcoming round of national team fixtures is the number star players have not been selected for their recent national matches.
These players will still be hoping to make the final Qatar rosters, but a number need to regain form. Players still needing to catch the eye of their national team coaches include:
Jadon Sancho
To make the England squad Sancho needs to have a terrific season. Having only contributed six goals since joining Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund, his current form is not good enough to warrant an invitation to the England squad.
He has scored twice in the six games he has played this season. However, his goal against Leicester was the difference between winning and losing for his team. It was a significant contribution to the away win that increased the odds of Manchester United at the uk sports betting sites not on gamstop where punters have been able to enjoy some of the safest wagering experiences with licenced options.
Jesse Lingard
Lingard has had an eventful career. Influential in the Manchester United squad during Jose Mourinho’s time as manager, his impact diminished with each new coach; as a consequence of his mediocre play and increased competition for his starting position in the club’s attacking midfield, he struggled the starting 11. He is looking to reinvigorate his fortunes at Nottingham Forest.
Anthony Martial
With its deep pool of talented athletes, the fight to be one of the 26 French players travelling to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup is fierce. Martial wasn’t a regular starter for Manchester United last season due to his poor fitness and lack of consistency.
Even if the player from Monaco’s academy does make a comeback in form, he will have a long road ahead before starting for France in the World Cup. However, a spot in the tournament would be a huge step up from where he is now.
Mario Gotze
After scoring his now legendary goal in Brazil’s 2014 World Cup final – which Germany won for a fourth time – he became a household name. However, the super sub has not been called up for the national team since then.
His injuries and ongoing struggle with a metabolism sickness led to his fall from favour at Bayern Munich, and he could not regain his former form upon his return to Dortmund.
The 30-year-old performed well for the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven and scored his most goals in a season since 2013/14, which helped him make a stunning move back to his homeland with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Last chances
The dream, of course, is to make it to the final World Cup roster. But, realistically, most players know they must provide their national team coaches with a string of good performances to achieve this traditional goal. One game is unlikely to be enough from a player hoping to impress his coach, and so performances throughout a season are much more telling of the player’s in-match capabilities for his team.
