NYCFC to get its own stadium in Queens

November 16 – New York Football Club (NYCFC), owned by City Football Group, and New York City have reached a deal for a new football stadium to be built in Queens.

NYCFC will pay approximately $780 million to build a 25,000-seater stadium in Willets Point, Queens, according to the New York Times.  The stadium is expected to be completed by 2027.

The club currently play at Yankee Stadium, an iconic baseball venue and home of the New York Yankees. Since 2012, the MLS team has been looking to develop a new stadium with Flushing Meadows Corona Park and then the Bronx as possible locations, but both projects failed to materialise.

However, NYCFC and city officials confirmed that the club will be allowed to build a new stadium across the street from Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, in Willets Point. Officials indicated that the club will cover the stadium costs as the city leases the land to NYCFC.

NYCFC began its search for a permanent home stadium and came closest in 2020 with local developers on a project in the Bronx, which ultimately fell through.

“This is just another step toward this vision that we want our clubs to be embedded in the community that’s accessible to fans,” said the MLS’s Don Garber.
