Manchester court sentences 39 violent anti-Glazer protesters

November 28 – A total of 39 football fans have been sentenced for disorder over the protest against the Glazer family at Old Trafford that saw fans break into the stadium.

The protest resulted in the postponement of the game against Liverpool in May last year.

Offences included assault, criminal damage and burglary. The defendents, aged from 15 to 52, were banned from attending matches but none were jailed.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said 36 officers were assaulted, with one officer receiving a serious facial injury requiring medical treatment, along with stewards and security staff.

Damage caused inside the stadium exceeded £70,000 and included £60,000 worth of damage to TV cameras.

Assistant Chief Constable Wasim Chaudhry said: “GMP’s Major Investigation Team launched an extensive investigation to make sure these people were located and made to face the consequences of their appalling actions that day.

“Our officers put their lives on the line every day and it is absolutely shameful that anyone would willingly assault an emergency worker.

“We simply will not tolerate this happening.”

The incident took place in the midst of the pandemic when emergency responders were “already stretched”.

“I hope these people feel ashamed of their actions and have some sense of remorse,” said Chaudry.
