December 19 – Construction is set to resume at the World Cup stadium in Manaus where a young worker recently fell to his death, prompting a walkout amid heightening safety fears six months ahead of the big kickoff.

Officials representing the workers inspected the stadium over two days and concluded that the relevant safety measures were in place at the venue that will host four World Cup matches next June, including high profile fixtures between England and Italy and the United States and Portugal.

The accident was the second at the venue and came two weeks after two workers died when a crane collapsed at the Sao Paulo stadium scheduled to host the June 12 opening match between Brazil and Croatia.

“Now we will meet with (constructor) Andrade Gutierrez to recreate the timetable and reprogram what still needs to be done and determine new deadlines,” local Manaus World Cup coordinator Miguel Capobiango Neto said in a statement.

The Arena Amazonia is one of six stadiums that will not meet FIFA’s end-of-year deadline for delivery. Organisers hope to have it ready by mid-January, when the first test event is scheduled to take place with about 10,000 workers who participated in the stadium’s construction serving as spectators.
