December 22 – French superstar Karim Benzema could reverse his decision to retire from international football if Zinedine Zidane takes over from Didier Deschamps as manager of the national team, according to French reports.
The Real Madrid forward, ruled out of the French World Cup squad because of injury, announced his decision to quit international football a day after France lost the final.
There were unconfirmed rumours that the 35-year-old was set to make a shock return to the French side in time for the final having returned to Real Madrid training.
But his future faced doubt after it was reported he turned down a chance to fly to Qatar to watch the game, reinforcing claims of a total breakdown with Deschamps
Deschamps’ future as manager of the French team is set to be decided in the coming weeks, and he will reportedly have a meeting with French FA president Noel Le Graet in January.
