January 17 – 583 football clubs will be entitled to vote in the upcoming Congress of Bulgarian Football Union on 14 February, when the elections for a new president of the federation will take place. That was announced after a meeting of the Executive Committee – 137 clubs were excluded because they are not currently engaged in any activity.

So far the current president of federation Borislav Mihaylov has no opponent for the post though he has expressed a hope that there will be at least one formal application. The deadline for submissions is January 31.

Mihailov has been president of the Bulgarian Football Union since 2005. In recent years, the former goalkeeper suffered much criticism for its management, with much of it coming from the Bulgarian legend Hristo Stoichkov.

“I hope there will be one opponent at least. It is very easy to spit on somebody, and after that no one appeared for elections. I think I will have an opponent in the elections “, said Mihaylov, who is also a member of the Executive committee of UEFA.

Mihaylov said that if he should be elected again, he will not make radical changes. The format of the Bulgarian championship was changed last year and the teams in the elite group were reduced to 14 – next year they will drop to 12.

“When a company is profitable and works well, there is no need to make many changes,” he said.

Mihaylov, however, expressed concern that not all of the teams from the Bulgarian championship will begin the second stage of the league. According to the new format, European qualification places will be decided after crucial play-offs.

“We still do not know how many teams will begin the spring session of the championship (because of financial problems). I do not regret that we reduced the group. Next year it will be comprised of 12 teams and will show whether this format is correct for our championship or not,” said Mihaylov.
