Scots and Welsh FA’s dedicate Pinatar Cup clash to Football v Homophobia campaign

February 19 – The Scottish FA and the Football Association of Wales (FAW) have dedicated the February 21, Scotland v Wales match at the Pinatar Cup tournament to the Football v Homophobia campaign.

The Pinatar , now in its third edition, is an international women’s tournament being held in San Pedro del Pinatar, Spain, from 15 to 21 February 2023. Iceland and the Philippines are the other two competing teams. Iceland and Wales are joint top of the table going into the final round of matches on February 21.

This month marks the Football v Homophobia (FvH) Month of Action, which unites football in opposing homophobia and prejudice against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT+) people, as well as welcoming and celebratingdiversity across the game.

The Scottish FA and FAW said the “aim to increase visibility of this campaign, encouraging conversation on theimportance of supporting the LGBTI+ community and highlighting the challenges and barriers that still exist across the game.”

Carys Ingram, FAW Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Integrity Executive said: “It’s incredibly important that we continue to create opportunity, visibility, awareness and conversation around the barriers and challenges our LGBTI+community face in football and how we move towards a better future where there are not only opportunities provided, but the LGBTI+ community can also feel a sense of belonging in these environments.”

Her message was echoed by Munro Stevenson, Participation and Engagement Manager, LEAP Sports Scotland.

“This historic landmark demonstrates the hard work put in by the Scottish FA, FAW and our partners at FvH Cymru, ensuring that homophobia has no place in Scottish or Welsh football. Representation and allyship at an elite level is often seen by

the LGBTI+ football community as the most impactful way to make meaningful change in our sport,” said Stevenson.
