Sheffield United bounce back to Premier League after two-year gap

Sheffield United

April 27 – Sheffield United are back in the English Premier League after a two-year absence.

The Blades defeated West Bromwich Albion 2-0 on Wednesday to be guaranteed the second automatic promotion spot in the second-tier Championship, joining champions Burnley in the top flight next season.

United have retained second position since November 13, when Burnley went top. They also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup where they were knocked out by Manchester City on Saturday.

Their success on the pitch has been in direct contrast to the uncertainty off it. They were placed under a transfer embargo in January, lifted last week, for missed payments to another club whilst a protracted takeover by Nigerian businessman Dozy Mmobuosi remains in the balance.

United fans will hope that promotion will see off-the-field issues sorted in time for their Premier League return in August.
