May 16 – For the first time, the Women’s Champions League final will be sold out with all 34,100 tickets for the flagship match between FC Barcelona and Wolfsburg at the PSV Stadium in Eindhoven sold.
The news comes after another weekend of record-breaking crowds in women’s football which saw 77,390 spectators at Wembley Stadium watch Chelsea beat Manchester United, setting a world record attendance figure for a women’s domestic club match.
The last batch of tickets Champions League final tickets went on sale on May 15 via the Dutch FA (KNVB) and by the end of the day, the European governing body said that the biggest’s game in club football was sold out. The match will break the record attendance for a women’s football game in the Netherlands, previously at 30,640 fans at the Netherlands vs Australia friendly.
“This is the first time we have fully sold out a Women’s Champions League final,” said Uefa managing director of women’s football Nadine Kessler.
“And that’s a few weeks in advance, which is just another sign that we have reached a new level. The amount of fans who wish to travel with their team has risen enormously, too. Each team has picked up an allocation of more than 4,500 for their own supporters – far more than ever before. In addition, we can expect fans from both teams to have also acquired tickets through the general sale. It’s going to be an amazing occasion for everyone, whether in the stadium or in front of the TV.”
Last season’s Women’s Champions League final between FC Barcelona and Olympique Lyon drew a crowd of 32,257 in Turin. The Spanish club return to the final after defeating Chelsea in the semi-finals. They will meet Germany’s Wolfsburg who ended English aspirations by overcoming Arsenal 5-4 on aggregate in a nail-biting tie.
The secretary general of the KNVB Gijs de Jong said: “We have wanted to host the UEFA Women’s Champions League final in the Netherlands for quite some time, so it’s great to see it happen now. And it’s even more wonderful that we will become the first sold-out final in history.
“During – and in the years since – UEFA Women’s EURO 2017, which was also hosted here, we have seen what a major football event can bring to our country. With this in mind, we recently launched our bid to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027, together with Germany and Belgium.”
The final will be played on June 3. Next season’s final will be staged at Bilbao’s San Mames Stadium.
Women’s football has been on a run of record breaking attendances following the Euro 2022 finals, and not just in Europe.
Last September, Arsenal set the Women’s Super League attendance record when 47,367 fans attended the derby match against Spurs at Emirates Stadium.
In the US a match between San Diego Wave and Angel City FC set a new NWSL attendance record with a sold-out crowd of 32,000 at Snapdragon Stadium.
