Bulgarian police act on new match-fixing reports

Pirin Gotse Delchev

February 18 – Bulgaria has again been hit by match-fixing, with police launching an investigation into claims that fixers attempted to rig the result of a domestic league match earlier this season.

The unnamed match apparently featured two sides in the bottom half of the top division and is the latest incident to mar Bulgarian football, which has in the past drawn stern criticism from the European Commission for doing little to fight match-fixing.

Last July, the Bulgarian football union threatened to expel Pirin Gotse Delchev from the country’s top division over “their failure to respect the principles of fair play”.

The threat came after Pirin were widely criticised for their performance in a 7-1 defeat at then league leaders Botev Plovdiv and local media reported that players from the Gotse Delchev-based side have been involved in rigging.
