February 25 – South Africa’s premier club knockout cup, The Nedbank Cup, has announced prize money of R7 million ($647,000) for the winner of this year’s competition, an increase of R1 million ($92,000) from last year. Total prize money for the competition is R20 million ($1.85 million).
The Nedbank Cup is now into the final rounds with 16 qualifiers having started from the original open list of entrants. The format sees the 16 Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs, eight National First Division (NFS) teams, and eight amateur teams go into the main draw of 32 teams. The PSL teams enter the main draw automatically, while the NFD clubs play knockout qualifiers against each other. The amateur teams go through a series of qualifiers to enter the main draw.
All 16 Premier Soccer League teams will be given a participation fee of R250 000 (S23,000).
The losing finalists will receive R2.5 million ($231,000), while losing semi-finalists will each get R1 million ($92,000). Clubs knocked out in the quarter finals will earn R400,000 ($37,000), and those who are defeated in the last 16 will earn R200,000 ($18,500).
Those who lose in the round of 32 will each get R100 000 ($9,250).
Nedbank took over the sponsorship of the Cup in 2008, the cup was first played in 1971 and has been won 13 time by current Cup holders Kaiser Chiefs.
This season Platinum Stars have been the leading team in South Africa and are going for a treble of the league, league cup and nedbank Cup. The competition is currently at the last 16 stage.
