February 28 – The Ghana Premier League, which has signed Ghana’s First Capital Plus Bank as its headline sponsor, is rolling out a number of marketing initiatives to support the partnership. The bank will pay $10 million in five year deal, easily a record sponsorship for the league.
The first initiative is the introduction of a reward schemes for excellent individual performances from players. The scheme will also extend to supporters who show exceptional support.
“One of our main objectives is to improve the patronage of football,” said First Capital Plus Bank CEO John Kofi Mensah.
“The sponsorship even though directly doesn’t talk about spectators; we have carved up something for spectators and it is very interesting.
“We are also going to introduce best player awards for each match very soon.
“Then we are also going to do some kind of remote control assessment of who is going to be the best player of the month.
“We may have to select a panel and give a certain percentage to the public and then take the statistics and put all together to pick out our best players.”
– One player who won’t be winning rewards for excellence is Enoch Adjei, who plays for Soccer Rex, a Jasikan-based Volta Regional Division One team. Adeji was arrested for allegedly offering his mother for religious sacrifice to a spiritualist.
Adjei had originally wanted to kill his 50-year-old sick mother at Jasikan to make it easier for him to transport the human parts needed for the rituals to Accra. But the buyer, acting on police instruction, told Adjei to bring the mother alive to ease the difficulty of having to transport her body parts for the rituals.
Adjei apparently had the idea after spotting the billboard of a spiritualist on an away match in Kasoa in the Central Region. The spiritualist had advertised how he could get rich quickly.
Adjei is currently under arrest. His mother is back in Jasikan.
