March 5 – Romania’s league association LPF is currently negotiating a new broadcasting rights deal for the Liga 1 which is expected to total €100 million for the next three years. The negotiations are expected to be completed this March, with several major media players set to bid for the contract, reported local daily Jurnalul National.
Mircea Sandu, head of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), announced that Gino Iorgulescu, president of the LPF, is in the process of sealing the record high deal for broadcasting the top tier of the country’s professional football league.
Currently, the Romanian league is broadcast by local TV channels Digi Sport, Dolce Sport and Antena 1. However, the rights expire at the end of this season. Some of the potential players looking to acquire the rights include telecoms operator RCS & RDS, and private TV channels Pro TV and Look TV, according to locally reported information.
Auras Brasoveanu, who heads the second tier of Romanian professional football league, told local radio station Sport Total FM that the packaged three-year deal will most likely include the broadcasting rights for both the Liga 1 and Liga 2. The two Romanian leagues are trying to negotiate a contract which would maximise benefits for all sides, according to Brasoveanu.
There are 18 Romania-based clubs compete in the Liga 1, and a further 24 sides in the Liga 2.
