Euro U21: Germany held by Israel; England, France and Swiss win

June 23 – A highly disappointing summer for German football continued after their under-21 side, the defending champions, were held by outsiders Israel 1-1 on Thursday in their opening group game of the European Championship.

The spoils were shared in the Georgian city of Kutaisi despite the fact that the Germans missed not one but two penalties and even played against a ten-man Israeli side for the entire second half.

Youssoufa Moukoko missed from the spot with just two minutes on the clock, before Israel broke the deadlock against the run of play through Dor Turgeman. Yann Bisseck equalised with a header before Eden Karzev was sent off on the stroke of half-time. Jessic Ngankam then had another penalty saved 13 minutes from time.

In the same group, England opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over the Czech Republic.

Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey scored the opener before Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon had a goal ruled out for an infringement. Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe sealed victory deep into stoppage time for Lee Carsley’s side.

Elsewhere Switzerland beat Norway and France won 2-1 against Italy in Group D.
