Former Conmebol boss and FifaGate crim, Juan Ángel Napout, to get early release

July 3 – Disgraced former Conmebol president Juan Ángel Napout is to be released from a federal prison in the United States and deported after serving 5 1/2 years of his sentence for his role in the FifaGate scandal.

The Paraguayan was convicted on 22 December 2017, of one count of racketeering conspiracy and two counts of wire fraud conspiracy and sentenced to nine years at a low-security federal prison in Miami.

His conviction was upheld in 2020 and he had been scheduled for release on 9 August 2025.

However, Napout’s lawyer Juan Ignacio Gonzalez Macchi told a radio station in Paraguay that his sentence was being reduced and that he would be released on compassionate grounds on July 5.

Napout served as Paraguay FA boss from 2007 to 2014 and then as president of Conmebol for one year until he was arrested in December 2015, seven months after the infamous sweep of a raft of other FIFA bigwigs at the Baur au Lac hotel in downtown Zurich.

He was banned for life by FIFA in 2019.
