August 31 – Liu Jun, chairman of the Chinese Super League (CSL) company, is the latest high-profile figure to be placed under investigation for suspected serious violations of discipline and law.
His arrest comes six months after Chinese FA chairman Chen Xuyan was placed under investigation for suspected serious violations.
Liu was previously chairman of now-defunct Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning and was appointed chief executive of Italian giants Inter Milan in 2016, soon after the club was purchased by the Suning Holdings Group.
Liu, 47, has become the 14th significant figure in the Chinese football society to be investigated since Chinese authorities began intensifying efforts to fight corruption in the sport.
The crackdown started when Li Tie, former head coach of the Chinese men’s team, was placed under investigation in November last year charged with corruption and bribery.
Since the start of this year, more than 10 high-ranking and mid-level officials of the Chinese Football Association (CFA) as well as former officials of the CSL company have been put under investigation on suspicion of disciplinary and legal violations.
