April 8 – According to a new study from GlobalWebIndex, 90% of UK Twitter users will tune in to watch the World Cup in Brazil this summer.
With excitement already building up on the social media platform with just over two months until the festival of football begins on June 12, one in three UK Twitter users have stated that their anticipation is higher for this year’s World Cup rather than the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
Twitter has become a monumental tool for football fans over the last few years with 46% of UK football fans taking part in the GlobalWebIndex study agreeing that football news breaks on Twitter before any other means.
With football scores shared across the globe on Twitter before they reach other sources, 43% of football fans say they use Twitter to find out football scores rather than using more traditional means such as websites, newspapers, score apps or even waiting for highlights programmes on the games.
Goals are being Tweeted seconds before they are broadcast due to the satellite time delay on reaching people’s TV’s or website streams. This only emphasises the instantaneous nature of Twitter and why football fans use it as a tool to follow their club and football in general.
With the World Cup being the biggest event in World football’s calendar it’s no surprise that Twitter will be used to base many conversations and follow the event on. The study suggests 87% of UK users will watch the World Cup on TV with 79% of them watching matches in a social environment with other people.
The Brazil World Cup will likely be the most watched ever both on TV and on social media platforms. According to the study 31% of people have watched a football match on TV whilst simultaneously following the buzz around the game on Twitter.
This percentage is only likely to rise this summer with people wanting to hear other people’s views and give their own whilst watching the games.
