May 1 – Thousands of fans could struggle to use the internet at half of the stadiums during this summer’s World Cup, a top government official has admitted, the latest headache in a sea of worry as Brazil readies for the world’s biggest sporting event.
Communications Minister Paulo Bernando said that six of the 12 stadiums have not yet arranged deals to install Wi-Fi networks, leaving only mobile networks available, which are unlikely to be able to meet the high volume demand on match days in a sold-out stadium.
“Even if those stadiums sign deals now, it will be very difficult to offer good-quality service,” Bernardo told reporters in the capital Brasilia.
Poor mobile coverage during the 2013 Confederation Cup, the World Cup dress rehearsal, raised concern about coverage at the main event for some venues.
