May 13 – One of the greatest ever Premier League players has joined Twitter, and immediately gained nearly 250,000 followers in his first 24 hours on the social media platform. Thierry Henry, Arsenal’s all-time top scorer joined Twitter at 12:44pm on Monday and was immediately welcomed by fellow players, fans and celebrities.
@ThierryHenry’s first Tweet read: “Hi this is Thierry Henry. This is my only official Twitter account. Everything posted on here will be my views. Welcome.” That Tweet was one of only five Tweets sent by the New York Red Bulls star throughout the day, but was retweeted by more than 15,000 by fans excited to see him join a huge list of celebrities and in particular footballers on the social media forum.
According to topsy.com @thierryhenry was mentioned over 70,000 times in the first 11 hours he was active on the site, an amount of Tweets that Henry would struggle to read through in a week let alone a few hours.
Henry has only followed 15 people himself during his short stint online- including former teammates Robin Van Persie and Cesc Fabregas. He’s assured his fans that it will be him Tweeting rather than an agent or an agency as some celebrities do nowadays.
Celebrities including Piers Morgan, Lethal Bizzle and Gary Lineker welcomed Henry onboard with the latter Tweeting “It appears that the great footballer and BBC Sport World Cup pundit @ThierryHenry has joined twitter. Welcome. Bienvenue.”
Henry’s account was set up earlier in the day as @onefourall before administrators at Twitter transferred his account to @ThierryHenry and verified him an hour later.
Thierry joins fellow Arsenal “Invincibles” Martin Keown (martinkeown5), Robert Pires (piresrobert7), Ray Parlour (realromfordpele) and Jens Lehmann (jenslehmann) as an Arsenal legend now on Twitter.
