Peru fire Reynoso after poor start sees them bottom of Conmebol 2026 qualifying

December 14 – Peru have dismissed their coach Juan Reynoso following a disappointing start to their 2026 World Cup qualifiers campaign.

Reynoso has become the latest casualty in the early stages of the marathon qualifiers in South America with the Peruvian federation (FPF) taking decisive action after multiple defeats left Peru bottom of the table.

“Today it is our duty to inform that the best understanding has been reached to end his cycle as manager and we express our best wishes for success in the next steps of his career,” the FPF said in a statement.

Peru have two points from six matches that included defeats to Bolivia and Chile. Last year, Reynoso succeeded Ricardo Gareca who guided the Peruvians to their first World Cup in 36 years in 2018.

The next coach will first have to lead Peru at the 2024 Copa America in the United States where the team has been drawn in Group A alongside reigning champions Argentina, Chile and a Concacaf playoff winner. Next September, the focus shifts to the 2026 finals again with qualifiers against Colombia and Ecuador.

Peru’s hopes however remain in the balance despite their underwhelming start. In 2026, the World Cup will for the first time feature 48 teams, meaning that South America will have 6.5 slots instead of 4.5.
